Private vision insurance often helps make eyecare products and services more affordable — especially for large families.
The Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) provides basic and emergency care to people living in Ontario. OHIP covers eyes exams for citizens under the age of 20, aged 65 or older, or with a covered medical condition. OHIP supports those under Ontario Works, ODSP, and those with refugee status.
OHIP covers one routine eye exam and any required follow-up assessments each year—but only for those who meet the above qualifications and fall within a specific age range. Those between the ages of 20 and 65 do not receive this coverage unless they have a specific medical condition or disease that affects their eyes.
If you are unsure whether OHIP will cover your eye exam, please give our office a call to discuss your options. Even if OHIP does cover your next eye exam, private vision care is still useful for lowering the cost of prescription eyewear and other services.
